Once you've read the Rules, it's time to create your first character. How do I do that, you ask? Here's how:
Step One: The Name The first thing you need to do is decide on a name for your character. This means a first name, at least one middle name, and a surname. You may not name your character anything along the lines of "skoolsux" or "iluvharrypotter". If you do, your character will be denied. A name is something more along the lines of "Catherine Annika Smith" or "Morpheus Richard Dorsey". In fact, if you absolutely have to, you can feel free to use either of those. I'll warn you right now: I'm a name nerd and a WVU football fan. If you want to get in good with the Headmistress, do not name your character Nevaeh Kaiyleah Rodriguez. (In fact, any students named Rodriguez have a high chance of being expelled during the Welcoming Feast.)
There is, of course, an ever-growing list of banned surnames: Black Dumbledore Malfoy Potter (Rodriguez) Weasley Zabini
If you can give me a good reason to use one of those names (such as a distant cousin from the States), PM me and we'll talk. However, I would rather you came up with a name and a family history of your own.
If you push it too much, I'll start banning first names as well. I am a name nerd and proud of it.
Step Two: Who is your character? Once you have an original (but tolerable) name for your character, you need to decide who your character is. Some people might say this step comes first; have it your way.
The two choices you have right now are to make a student or to make a staff member. If you're interested in making a staff member, you can go here to see what we need. If you decide to become one of the staff members, thankyouthankyouthankyou!
Staff members also have the opportunity to become the King/Queen of one of the houses. At the moment, we have three houses in need of the King/Queen. If you don't know what I mean by King/Queen, you should go check out this thread. (That thread also has descriptions of the classes and a list of existing staff members.) We are also in need of one or two Deputy Heads, if anyone would be interested in that.
If you would prefer to have a student character, you need to decide what grade that student should be in. Age - Grade 11-12 - 6 12-13 - 7 13-14 - 8 14-15 - 9 15-16 - 10 16-17 - 11 17-18 - 12 Grade six corresponds to Hogwarts year one, and so on.
Step Three: Developing your character's personality. Now that you know what role your character is going to play, you need to decide how your character is going to play it.
If your character is a professor, you need to decide several aspects of his or her personality. How does he/she treat the students? Lost Canyon is like any other school: Some teachers are pushovers, some use favoritism like toilet paper, and some terrify their students by singing fifties hits at the top of their lungs. Think of your own high school teachers. Every teacher is different, and you need to decide about yours.
Your professor will also have to interact with his or her coworkers. Maybe he/she is a real ass around the students, but all the others love him/her. Maybe he/she is the most hated teacher in the school, but the students love him/her. Whatever the case, you need to decide.
If your character is a student, he or she also has different ways of behaving around different people. In the dormitory, he/she is a total clown, loved by all, but in class, he/she is shy and quiet, and one-on-one with the teachers, he/she is sarcastic and defiant. That same student could also have a total different persona at home, at parties, and anywhere else you stick him/her.
Step Four: Fill out your character application. Now that you have a general idea of who your character is, you're ready to submit your character for review. You can find the application here. Once you have posted your application, PM me to get your character reviewed. In most cases, this will be done within eighteen hours. In many cases, this can be as little as an hour.
Step Five: Further Development. Now that your character has been accepted, you need to develop him or her further. Jump into the role-playing. Hash out relationships between your character and others in the Relationships board. Go wild.

If your student is a transfer student, you obviously need to decide where he or she is from. If it's a canon school (Hogwarts, Durmstrang, Beauxbatons), your student is going to need to do some catching up when he or she starts at Lost Canyon. Why? American wizards and witches do not use wands. Your student will need to report to the Headmistress immediately upon arrival in order to be directed to a professor or student who can help the new student learn wandless magic.
If your character is from a non-canon school, it's your choice whether or not he/she has been trained in wandless magic.
